What to expect
Before surgery
Your surgeon evaluates the jaw deficiency, the bite relationship, and your overall treatment goals to determine whether Distraction Osteogenesis is the right approach. Imaging and treatment planning help map the procedure, device placement, and timing for any related orthodontic or restorative care.
During surgery
The jawbone is surgically divided, and the distraction device is placed. After a short healing period, the device is activated gradually to move the bone segments apart in a controlled way. As the space opens, new bone forms between the segments while the jaw is lengthened or widened.
After surgery
Once the desired movement is achieved, the bone is left in place to consolidate and harden. After the new bone has matured, the distractor is removed. Additional treatment such as orthodontics, bite correction, or implant planning may follow depending on the original goals of care.
